FAQ's for Belly Dance Students

1) What supplies do I need? You just need comfortable clothing, preferably something that lets me see your movements. It's nice to have ballet slippers or other dance shoes, but many students prefer to be barefoot for class. You can wear a coin or fringe hip scarf if you like (I sell them at wholesale prices for my students), but I don't recommend buying one until you're sure you want to continue. You'll be hard pressed to find another use for it!

2) Will I be the only out-of-shape student in the room? Heck no! Students come in all shapes, ages and sizes, and belly dance offers a very supportive community of women. Check out these video clips of the lovely Hiba to see how fabulous the dance can look on a woman with a "real" body!

3) How long until I can perform? Depends. Some students with a dance background, plenty of time & motivation to practice -- and a lot of courage -- perform in student recitals after a few months. Others wait a year or so to do their first student show and don't perform professionally until they've got a few student solos under their belts. Performing professionally is a long-term goal.

4) Perform? AAACK! Don't worry. You don't ever have to perform! Many of my students don't.

5) Does this class do student shows? I look for opportunities, when I have enough students who are ready and interested. St. Louis has a very active belly dance community, with haflas (student show/parties), seminars and workshops featuring big names from around the world, etc. I try to offer an opportunity to perform as a group at least once or twice a year for those who think it would be fun. If you're ready to try a solo, or a duet with another student, let me know!

6) Do you offer private lessons? Yes. I charge $35 per hour, and will come to your home it it's near Belleville. Private or semi-private lessons are a great way to progress quickly, as I can address your individual strengths and weaknesses.

7) Where can I learn more about the dance? See my Links page and start with the general information sites at the top of the page.

Other questions? Ask me before or after class, or feel free to e-mail me any time - I'm happy to hear from you. You're welcome to call me (397-1419) but I'm tough to reach by phone.
